Yamaha MD8 ( 600 Eur )
The
Yamaha MD8 multi-track MD recorder is a treasure. 8 tracks of digital recording
with literally unlimited ping-pong capabilities. The MD8 uses the MiniDisc
format, specifically the MD Data audio format for 8-track recording. The
MD Data medium requires no formatting before use, and provides 18 minutes
of recording time for 8-track, 37 minutes for 4-track, 74 minutes for 2-track,
and 148 minutes for MONO. And, unlike some of the other MD multi-trackers,
the MD8 will work just fine with simple stereo, 2-track MiniDiscs, both
the recordable versions and the playback only versions.
The layout of the MD8 is fairly intuitive. Beginning from the left of the recorder, are the 12 input channels and controls, featuring separate cue pan and level controls, and sweepable peaking type mid EQ. The Master section features the input level controls for inputs 9-12 that are sent to the stereo bus for mixing, as well as the Group Assign switches, Group master controls, and monitor switches. The display panel features the status indicators, MIDI indicators, counters, separate track level meters and stereo level meters, and track recording indicators. Just above, in the Disc Transport section, are the transport control buttons, search buttons, mark buttons, function buttons, and editing controls and Cursor shuttle/DATA dial. The rear panel of the MD8 is where you will find mic/line inputs 1-8, line inputs 9-12 (for stereo output sources), and I/O inputs (great for compressors, limiters, noise gates). The rear panel also features AUX SEND jacks, 2 balanced XLR inputs, separate monitor out and stereo out jacks, a 2-track in section, 8 track direct outputs, and the Phantom power on/off switch. On the front of the MD8 you will find the phone jacks and the Punch I/O jack.
